1515 Wolsey made Cardinal and Chancellor William 4th Lord Borthwick to whom was entrusted the castle of Stirling after Flodden. He became guardian of the infant James V after his father James 1V was killed at Flodden. In August 1538, he settled his lands in tail male with remainder to heirs male whosoever bearing the names and arms of Borthwick 1538
